Aprašymas

Hindsight to Foresight: How the Stories We Tell About the Past Shape the Futures We Can Imagine

We usually imagine the past as fixed and the future as open. The brain doesn't organise experience quite so neatly. Remembering and imagining draw on much of the same constructive machinery - so much so that people who lose the ability to recall their past in detail often lose, at the same time, the ability to picture their future in detail. The two are not separate systems. They are one capacity, used in two directions.

Hindsight to Foresight explores what follows from that fact: when the story we tell about what happened becomes fixed - too certain, too final, too global - it doesn't just distort memory. It quietly narrows the futures we're able to picture, and the futures we're willing to attempt. A relationship that ended once can become "closeness is temporary." One redundancy can become "I am no longer someone employers want." The past stops being a record and starts being an instruction.

Drawing on the neuroscience of episodic memory and prospection, this book offers a six-stage method - moving from Awareness through to what it calls Resilience², the capacity to keep generating workable futures under uncertainty - for loosening that authority without denying what actually happened. Facts are never in dispute. What becomes negotiable is the generalisation built on top of them. Worked examples carry two composites end to end through the full sequence, alongside applications to regret, depression, anxiety, trauma, inherited family expectation, career foreclosure, and decision paralysis, plus a fourteen-day practice for putting the method to use.

This is not a book about positive thinking. It is a book about precision - about what the past is allowed to predict, and what it isn't.
